I go travelling a lot and I always meet new people wherever I go. And when we meet someone new (or old), the first thing we do is say hello. But it's not as simple as that! There are so many different ways to greet people! I want to show you some of the most common and most useful words and phrases, so that you will be prepared to greet people the right way according to the situation!

Let's start with some brainstorming! Watch the video and get to know several different ways of saying hello!

  • Good afternoon!
  • How are you today?
  • Hello!
  • Nice to see you again!
  • How's things?
  • Hey, how's it going?
  • Hi you!
  • How are you doing?
  • Yo man, what's up?
  • Are you alright, mate?
  • Hello and welcome!

What do you think? Which of these phrases would you use to greet whom? Don't worry if you don't get it right from the start!

  • "Hey, what's up?"
  • "Hi, how are you doing?"
  • "Good Morning, Anne!"
  • "Good Morning, Mr Smith!"
  • Boss, Teacher
  • Friend
  • Someone you just met
  • Co-worker

Now watch the next video! Listen closely and play it again if you didn't understand it! That usually helps! After that, take a look at the list of phrases that were used in the video. Can you put them in the right order?

  • 1
  • 3
  • 2
  • "Good Morning!"
  • "Good Morning, Anna! How are you?"
  • "Fine, thanks! How are you?"
ATTENTION! In England and America, it is very common to ask "How are you?" to greet people. Mind that they don't really want to know how you are! Just say, "Fine, thanks, how are you?". If they ask you again after that, you are allowed to answer honestly!

Now that you've seen so many different ways of greeting people, I want you to think about what you can remember and fill in the gaps in the sentences below. These are all very common ways of saying hello. Try not to forget them! Mind the spelling and capital letters!

You can choose from these words:
  • meet
  • Hi
  • how
  • Morning
  • Good
    •  , what's up?

    •  Hey,
       are you today?

    •  Morning, Mr Parker!

    •  Good
       , Anne!

    •  Hello! It's so nice to

You're almost done! This is my last exercise for you! You have to decide which one of the different ways of greeting in each question is right for the situation. Mark the correct answer!

    • You are in your office at work. A colleague enters your room. What do you say?
      • Hi Steven, how are you?
      • Hello Mr Roberts, nice to meet you!
      • What's up, man?
    • It's your sister's birthday and your uncle from Scotland is coming to visit. You haven't seen him in a while. What do you say?
      • Uncle John, good to see you! How are you?
      • Good Morning, uncle John.
      • Hi.
    • Your boss introduces you to your new colleague. How to you greet her?
